You can customize the time tracking mechanism to better suit your team's needs. Use the new Time tracking provider feature to decide which system acts as the single source of truth for your logged work hours. Switch between standard Jira time tracking and dedicated solutions to unlock greater flexibility in reporting and time management.
No data will be lost, changing the provider only affects newly logged time. Your historical data remains intact and will not be deleted.
Why use the Worklogs time tracking provider?
When you select Worklogs as your time tracking provider, the native Jira time logging UI is replaced by Worklogs modules. These modules are designed to maintain Jira's standard processes while providing enhanced time logging capabilities.
Key benefits
Using Worklogs as your time tracking provider helps teams:
-
Improve efficiency: Log time faster with additional logging options and a guided UX.
-
Reduce errors: Minimize inconsistencies through improved data entry and validation rules.
-
Standardize processes: Align time tracking across teams, which is particularly effective in enterprise environments.
-
Access advanced features: Leverage Worklogs' expanded reporting and management capabilities.
How to change the Time Tracking Provider in Jira settings
To change the time tracking provider for your instance, you must have Jira Administrator permissions. Once you have them, follow these steps:
-
Navigate to the main application settings by clicking the gear icon (⚙️) or selecting Settings from the app navigation menu.
-
Go to Work items → Time Tracking.
-
Locate the section named Time tracking provider.
-
Select your preferred provider from the dropdown list:
-
Jira provided time tracking: Time is logged and synchronized using Jira's native time tracking mechanism.
-
Worklogs time tracking provider: Time is logged via the Worklogs custom interface, which offers enhanced time management features. Note: All data is still stored natively within Jira, ensuring full compatibility with Jira’s standard data architecture.
-
How does this affect logging time?
The provider you choose directly dictates which mechanism powers the Log Time modal. Regardless of the selected provider, the process of opening the Log Time modal remains exactly the same for the end user. To learn how to log your time step-by-step, please refer to the Logging time section in our main guide.
What changes for the user?
When you change the Time tracking provider to Worklogs, the native Jira UI elements are replaced with our optimized modules. All worklogs will continue to be stored in the default Jira storage. In the work item view, users will still have access to the standard worklog list and the progress bar on the right side, just like in the native Jira solution. The only noticeable difference is the time logging modal itself, which will now offer expanded options and capabilities.
