Logging time for other user (Worklogs Advanced)

This feature is available exclusively in the Advanced edition. Users on the Standard edition will not see the user picker in the Log time modal.

The "Log time for other user" (LFO) feature allows permitted users to log time on behalf of another person. The work log is created with the target user as the real author in Jira - exactly as if they logged it themselves.
To enable Logging time for other user Admin needs to:

  1. Switch the Jira’s Time Tracking Provider into Worklogs Time Tracking Provider. To learn how to change the provider, see: Worklogs Time Tracking Provider.

  2. Add Log for other user (LFO) permission to chosen users. It can be done on admin page in General Permissions | Logging time for other user (LFO) section.

The LFO user picker is available everywhere the Log time modal can be opened:

  • Report view - via the blue Log time button or the clock icon in the table

  • Issue view - via the Actions (â‹Ż) button → Log work

  • Dashboard gadget

How it works - Report view

  1. Open the Worklogs app and click the Log time button (or the clock icon in a table cell).

  2. The Log time modal opens. If you have LFO permission, you'll see a user picker instead of the static avatar + name.

  3. The picker defaults to you ("me"). Click it to search for and select another user.

  4. Choose the target user - type to search by name. The list shows avatar + display name for each option.

  5. Fill in the remaining fields (issue, date, time spent, description, attributes).

  6. Click Log time to save.

How it works - Issue view

  1. Open a Jira issue.

  2. Click the Actions (â‹Ż) button in the top-right corner.

  3. Select Log work.

  4. The same Log time modal appears - with the user picker if you have LFO permission.

  5. Select the target user, fill in the time details, and click Log time.

Independence from other permissions

LFO works independently of other Worklogs permissions (App access, "View all worklogs", Custom permission roles). If it is needed a user with LFO can log time for someone even if they cannot view that person's worklogs.

Target user requirements

Time can only be logged for users who have access to the app at the platform level. Deactivated users and Service Desk customers are excluded.

Jira permissions respected

The target user must have permission to log work on the selected issue . If not, submission is blocked.

Time zone respected

When logging time for other user Worklogs will adjust time entry to time zone of chosen user. As a LFO user you will be inform about it by the flag on log time modal

After logging - reports and Jira

Work logs created via LFO appear exactly like any other work log:

  • In the Worklogs report - attributed to the target user

  • In the Issue Work log tab - the target user is shown as the author

  • In native Jira - the work log is truly authored by the target user

  • Remaining Estimate - Jira auto-adjusts it (subtracts logged time), same as a regular self-log.

  • Custom attributes - preserved on the work log, same as when logging for yourself
